Metal grommets were first used on clothing, or more specifically corsets, in the 1800's. For practical purposes, they kept fabric from ripping when lacing up undergarments and shoes. Now in the 21st century we continue to use them for more aesthetic design purposes.
Straying from their original purpose of lacing, grommets have also been used by designers in textile design such as with Prada, Alexander McQueen, and Marc Jacobs.
Metal is an easy way to turn something simple and sweet into piece with an edgier look.
For a while now, the mixing of feminine designs with harder accents has been trending- perhaps in line with the empowerment of women and externalizing our internal confidence and strength.
